Superintendent Ricci's New Brain Tumor Prevention Device
On December 5th, Superintendent Barry Ricci started wearing a portable device called Optune that prevents the formation of another brain tumor.
The use of this device comes after Mr. Ricci underwent surgery at Rhode Island Hospital this past June in order to remove a brain tumor. Ever since this tumor has been removed, Mr. Ricci has been tumor-free and in full recovery.
As for the device, Mr. Ricci said, “My doctor said to me that this ‘might be a good idea for you.’” He continued, “And I looked at it. I wasn’t thrilled about it. But, I said, ‘Okay. What do I have to lose?’”
In order for the device to function, four adhesive patches are applied to Mr. Ricci’s scalp and connected to the battery-powered device for at least 18 hours per day. The device then sends electrical impulses called Tumor Treating Fields to his brain in order to destroy any cancer cells that could result in the formation of another tumor.
“Technology is really fascinating.” Mr. Ricci continued, “But not a lot of people are using it. It’s approved. Some people don’t want this thing on their head.”
Seeing past the appearance of the device, Mr. Ricci took the advice from his doctor and decided to follow through with getting it prescribed to him. For the reason of the prevention of another brain tumor, he was impressed with the advanced technology and figured it would be better than putting chemicals in his body.
Mr. Ricci says that if people have questions about it, he would be happy to explain it to them. He shared his gratitude for the technology and continues to enjoy his daily interactions with students.
“While I was a little stressed about it [at first], it has been completely smooth,” Mr. Ricci said. “And the students I have run into have been very tolerant and respectful.”
