Mandarin Class Participates in Video Call With a Class in China
To conclude Foreign Language Week at Chariho, the Mandarin class participated in a video call with another class in China, in which both classes learned about each other's culture. During the Video Call, both parties greeted each other in both English and Chinese.
At the beginning of the school year, Chariho welcomed Ms. Wang as the new Mandarin teacher at Chariho, from the Teachers of Critical Languages Program. She moved here from China and gave an account in her own words about that transition as well as her many experiences working here in Rhode Island.
They began the call by performing for each other. The students in China had two art students perform a traditional Chinese dance after which the Chariho Students sang a traditional Chinese song. Both were met with immediate and exuberant applause.
They also asked various questions such as: Where are you from? What are you learning? Who is your favorite singer? (it was Taylor Swift) and many others.
The class also played a few guessing games, some students acting out traditional Chinese zodiac characters such as the rat, dragon, snake, monkey, and others. The Chinese students had Chariho guess character names and meanings as well as showing their evolution throughout time.
The students finally had to say goodbye, as it was already ten o’clock at night for the students in China, but before they went the students made sure to say goodbye.
