Book Nook: Scary Edition

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir - A truly awesome and action packed book! Full of magic, skulls, and outer space battles. This book has been acclaimed by Kelsy April, Savoy Manager, as “the best piece of literature published this year” and has gained a lot of support amongst the indie-punk crowd. Super funny with a very unique writing style that will have you hooked immediately. Definitely worth a read. Warning: this book contains mature content.

The Trial by Franz Kafka - Possibly the most mentally frustrating book I have read, ever. If you are familiar with Kafka’s work then you’ll probably agree that he isn’t the most pleasant of writers to begin with. But this book truly stands out amongst the rest, which makes it so great. This book follows a young man who is sent to trial, for crimes unknown, and must struggle to stay sane as he falls down the rabbit hole. Full of wacky and complex characters and scenes not for the faint of heart. The ending had me thinking for days.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley - So spooky! This classic is perfect for any level reader and will surely make anyone’s skin crawl. Shelley’s character development ( for the doctor and the monster) is absolutely incredible. Although a little plot lagging at times, the characters inner turmoil truly keep the book interesting. The imagery and animated plot also help to drive the story along and really created a movie in my head. Perfect for not just a science fiction reader but anyone who has an appreciation for the classics and some good old fashioned inner conflict.
